About This Book:
Book on Love, Longing, Intimacy, and Contentment by Al-Ghazali is part of his broader work, "The Revival of the Religious Sciences." Al-Ghazali investigates the topic of love in this work, but not just any type of love—he argues that love for God is the most profound and ultimate love, signifying the greatest goal of human life. He describes love as the true sensation we feel when we really appreciate and find something appealing. Al-Ghazali then dives into what makes humans love particular objects and how this emotion progresses through several stages.
He contends that every ethical activity we conduct, such as cultivating patience or expressing thanks, can eventually lead to genuine love. He claims that loving God, in particular, produces a special sense of satisfaction and contentment that exceeds all other experiences.
